Bat Out Of (Extraterrestrial) Hell
My media law lecture was cancelled allowing me to listen to Alex, Jamie and Louis' radio show, Another Planet's Hell (Wednesdays 6-8pm, CUR1350), after quite a while. It's still a fun show and well worth a listen, though obviously moreso when I'm free to email the studio with contributions about concept albums and Nazi dogfood (Pedigree Hun, of course), or whatever else they happen to be discussing at the time.
Flickr, the photo community, have released an interesting graph which reveals the most popular cameras amongst its users. It really highlights the success of the Canon range in particular, which I certainly agree with. I'd love a Canon EOS 400D if anyone's feeling particularly generous this Christmas!
The new Hary Potter Trailer is out. Unless you're a big fan, however, it's just not that great aside from the familiar musical refrain at the end. But the comparison is inevitably with arguably one of the finest Teasers ever in Prisoner of Azkaban, which seems a little unfair.

500 quid is a bit of a stretch darling… especially after that "Nazi dogfood" comment…

In fairness it was Jamie's idea for a Lassie film, resulting in her trial for war crimes, defended by Tom Hanks… I only named the dog food when he got stuck.
I always found Lassie suspicious myself. She always conveniently happened to be there whenever anyone fell down a mineshaft. Fell? Or were they pushed? I mean it's never "little Jimmy's been gunned down by AK-47 wielding criminals, which clearly couldn't have been me because I don't have opposable thumbs" is it?
Like I said: suspicious.

The 400D is a really nice camera, I now use one at the lab, and there are substantial usability improvements over the 350D, but other than that, I wouldn't say the differences were that great. The extra resolution certainly isn't obvious (as one would expect SQRT(8) is not that much smaller than SQRT(10)), IMHO the dust issue is over-blown if you're careful and don't spend your time in deserts etc. The focusing is a little better, I think, but again not a difference that would make me rush out and buy a replacement for my 350D. It's things like the screen, the eye sensor and the buffer that I noticed.
However, if you're looking for a DSLR, the 350D should be a bargin this Christmas.
But, don't be fooled, the cost of the body is a small part of the cost of a DSLR

Incidentally the graph suprises me, it doesn't seem to represent the statistical samples of market share that were done by OpenRAW.
For all of the OpenRAW survey's servere bias problems, I'd be suprised if the Canon vs Nikon was substantial.
Sure Canon were still ahead, but not by as much as that graph would seem to imply. Though of course without more information they border on meaninglessness…

Thanks for the info on the 350D/400D comparison. The former definitely falls into a more realistic price range at the moment, particularly when one adds the cost of the lens. Do you have a particular recommendation on that front?
I assume the Flickr graph is intended more as a point of interest than a legitimate survey. Or rather it is aware that it is confined to its userbase. Whether it says anything meaningful about that market (digital photo sharers?) is for the reader.

In fairness if you're here, chances are you're already procrastinating.

Best to have a chat in person about that, a lot depends on what you would use the camera for + portability vs quality tradeoffs etc.
